Yesterday I took the car to the repair shop with the kids. We were in an unfamiliar part of the city, and I wasn’t sure which way to go. While I was quite worried, they kept shouting, “This is so much fun!” Truly, our emotions are not shaped by objective reality, but by our experience of it and the meaning we give to those experiences.
I know this is deeply trite but the last paragraphs remind me of how “amateur” traces back to amo/amas/amat - to love in Latin. Like - something might be a slog but can you still remind yourself why you love it? Can you still feel that love for it? And then that can set you free, and it makes it light. And also the qualities of being an amateur, the lightness and ease, can also be what makes someone truly great at something.
What a wonderful approach to life, Ava.
